Flared skirts are super fun to wear for women or young girls, but it’s even more joyful to sew. In this article, we will make a flared skirt with an elastic waistband that would perfectly fit around your waist. Also, they are highly fungible and blend into any occasion. You can use them for casual, sports, party, and even semi-formal and formal wear.
So let’s just start making a flared skirt for your waist all from scratch.
Things you need
- Fabric – large enough for a skirt.
- Sewing machine.
- Measuring tape.
- Chalk.
- Common pins and thumb pins.
- Scissors.
- Calculator.
Making a Flared Skirt with an Exposed Elastic Waistband: Quick and Easy
Step 1. Taking Measurements
- First, you must take some measurements. For cutting fabric for a skirt, all you need is the radius of the waist and the length of your skirt.
- First, measure the circumference of your waist to find the radius of your waist.
- Now use the formula (radius = circumference/2*pi) to find the radius of your waist.
- You use the measuring tape to measure the length from your waist to the point where you want your skirt to end.
Step 2. Making Pattern
- Now take a large piece of paper or a chart paper.
- Now pivot the measuring tape or ruler to the corner of the paper.
- Rotate the measuring tape around the pivot while points – one at the radius and the other at length.
- Join the points to make two arcs.
- Cut along the two arcs with scissors to remove an excessive part, and your pattern is prepared.
Step 3. Cutting the Fabric
- Take a large squared fabric and fold it twice to make a smaller square. Make sure that the smaller rectangle is large enough to cut the skirt from it.
- Alternatively, if you can’t find large enough fabric, then you can use two smaller sizes. By that, you can make skirts in two halves and side seams to make a complete circular skirt.
- Now place the pattern over this folded fabric and cut off the excess.
- Your fabric will have a circular opening at the center and will look like a doughnut.
Step 4. Preparing the Elastic Band
- Take an elastic band of any color with the appropriate width. Cut the length of your elastic band 2” shorter than your waist.
- Now join the good sides of the elastic band and make a straight stitch with the help of your sewing machine while keeping a sewing allowance of ¼”.
- Now open the seam allowance in the following position and make a straight stitch on both seam allowances.
- Now your waistband is ready to be stitched to the skirt.
Step 5. Stitching Belt to Skirt
- Make a ¼” seam at the center circle and iron it properly.
- Now place the edge of the elastic band over the inner side of the seam as shown in the image, and fix the band position with common pins.
- Likewise, first, pin the band from the top, then at the bottom, then to the sides.
- Take it to the sewing machine and make a straight stitch along the pinned position.
Step 6. Hemming the Raw Edges of the Skirt (Finishing)
- Now double-fold the raw edges of the skirt and iron it to make a double-fold hem.
- With the help of a sewing machine, make a straight stitch on the folded hem. Elsewise for other hemming styles, you can also read:*********.
