Do you like large-sized floor cushions and pillows but don’t know how to make them? Then this might be the right time to learn a new sewing skill. In this article, I will teach you how to make a floor cushion from scratch step-by-step.
Making a simple floor cushion might be very easier. It can be done by sewing just two pieces of fabric together and filling them with pillow filling how which might sound very boring and aesthetically very less appealing.
Therefore, in this section, we will make a much more trendy, modern, and aesthetically appealing floor cushion that is highly presentable and much more fun to sew. So, let’s just start our project right away.
Things you need
- Solid color faux suede or Tapestry
- Pillow filler
- pins
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
Steps to make a cushion
Step 1. Selecting the Fabric
First, you need to select the fabric from which you want to make your floor cushion. I have recommended two options: Tapestry and Faux suede. In this project, I will be using faux suede as it is a very soft yet tough fabric that has a much more luxurious outlook.
Step 2. Cutting the Fabric
First, make a marking on your fabric and cut two large square pieces for the top and bottom of the cushion and four rectangular strips to give your cushion a 3D shape.
For this project, I am using square pieces of 30”x30” and rectangular pieces of size 6”x30’’. However, you can make them of any dimension as you like.
Step 3. Sewing Rectangular Sides
Now, after cutting, our first sewing task is to join all the rectangular pieces such that they make a close rectangular hoop. First, pin the good sides of two rectangular pieces from one edge. Now sew them together by leaving 1/4” seam allowance.
Likewise, pin the good sides of the third and fourth rectangle and sew them as well to form a closed square.
Step 4. Sewing the Top and Bottom of the Pillows
Now it’s time to sew the top and bottom of the pillows to the rectangular hoop. First, pin the good side of the top square to the good sides of the rectangular hoop. After pinning, sew them together along the pin.
Sew the same for the bottom square; however, leave a small 6” cavity unsewed in the bottom square.
Step 5. Filling Pillow Filler
Now form the left-out cavity, and turn the cushion inside out, so the good side comes out. Through the same cavity, fill the appropriate quantity of pillow filler into the cushion.
After filling, close the cavity from the inside by hand sewing so that the stitches are not visible.
Step 6. Creating Troughs
Your pillow is ready to use. However, it lacks aesthetics. For this, we will create troughs in the pillow.
First, locate the center of the pillow. Now take a long threaded needle (at least 4”) and tie a knot to the end of its thread. If you don’t know how to tie a quick thread knot, read:*************
Now enter the needle to the center located point and pass it through the pillow. Make sure that you maintain enough tension all the time to create a perfect trough. From the opposite side, reenter it and go back and forth like it. Then knot off the thread.
Now locate four other centers around the trough. These centers would be 7.5” from the edges for the same size as mine. Now create through there as well.
Step 7. Creating Gatherings around the Edges
Now to make a gathering around the cushion, you need to make some hand stitches around the edges.
First, pass the needle from the top of the cushion towards the side by leaving a 1” margin on both sides. Now pass the needle from the side to the top of the cushion by moving the needle slightly sideways. Make sure that you maintain enough tension to maintain a uniform gathering. Also, keep making knots after a few stitches so that you don’t lose all the gathering if the thread accidentally breaks off. Continue this process all the way around the edges.
Do the same for the bottom of the pillow as well. And your floor cushion is complete.

Concluding Remarks
Finally, your floor cushion is ready to be used, gifted, or sold. As you have learned a skill to make floor cushions, go ahead and try this skill on other projects with different shapes, sizes, and materials. Also you can incorporate other skills as well, like attaching a zipper to the cushion or making embroidery as well.
