Tutu looks great on young kids. I learned to make a tutu for my daughter for her 2nd birthday. And the bouncy layers of the tutu looked great on her. If you are looking for some sort of multi-layered tutu for your daughter that here is a complete step-by-step procedure to make a layered tutu from scratch – all by yourself.
Things you need
- Tulle rolls of different colors
- Elastic
- Thread and needle
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Posterboard
Step-by-step Procedure to Make a Three-layered Tutu
Step 1. Preparing Elastic Band for the Waist
- Measure the waist of your child. The waist of my daughter is about 16”.
- Cut the elastic 1” longer than the waist.
- Now make a loop of the elastic while overlapping 1” form ends
- Sew the elastic together using a threaded needle or sewing machine.
Step 2. Preparing tulle strips for tutu
- Now cut the poster board twice the length you want for the tutu. I have to cut a 24” long poster board to get a tutu length of 12”.
- Now we need 32 tulle strips which are double the inches of the waist (16″). Wrap the tulle around the poster board 32 times.
- Now cut the wrapped tulle from both sides of the strip
- Do the same procedure for the other two tulle colors as well.
Step 3. Ting tulle strips around the elastic band
- You need support around which you place your elastic band to tie tulle strips around the elastic. You can use a chair back, a large container, or any other thing of a reasonably larger size.
- Take one piece of each tulle strip color and give it a slight twist. Then bend it over and place it behind the elastic-like in the picture.
- Now pass the loose end of the tulle bungle from the loop that you have created.
- Likewise, tie other tulle strips around the elastic band until you completely cover the elastic band.
Concluding Remarks & More Variations
I hope that you have easily managed to make your first layered tutu. Now it’s time to experiment with some other variations on your own. For example, you can try this for more number of colored layers. You can also use some sort of curved pattern to get curved tulle strips. Also, you can stitch the elastic band with a large waistband for larger sizes. In short, there are numerous options that you can avail to make your next layered tutu.
